Search Engine Optimization (SEO) uses various methods to improve a website’s visibility and effectiveness through “natural” (organic or algorithmic) search engine results for selected keywords. Put simply, the higher ranking a website has on a search engine, the more visitors it will receive.
Search engine optimization also targets different types of searches, which may include image searches, industry-specific vertical search engines, or local searches.
Search Engine Optimization analyzes how search algorithms function and what people are looking for when they use a search engine. This may involve a website’s structure, presentation, and coding. SEO also can potentially fix problems that are blocking search engine indexing programs from completely “spidering” a website. The most noticeable components of SEO are adding content to a site that is easily indexed by search engine robots and generally making the website more appealing and user-friendly. Other methods of SEO known as “black hat SEO” or “spamdexing” employ methods like keyword stuffing or link farms that disable search engines. Search Engines are equipped to look for websites that use these techniques and may remove these websites from their indices.
SEO can also refer to “search engine optimizers,” which is a term that has been employed by consultants that specialize in optimization campaigns for their clients. These consultants offer search engine optimization as a single service or as one component of a more comprehensive marketing campaign. It is sometimes necessary to change the HTML source code of a site to carry out effective SEO, and if that is the case, search engine optimization may be incorporated into a website’s development and design. It is also common to see the term “search engine friendly” when referring to website design, menus, URLs, content management systems, and shopping carts. This simply means that they are easy to optimize using SEO.
